Square Enix sold the gaming studios Eidos, Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix Montreal for a fairly low price-and several game IPs such as Tomb Raider and Deus Ex.
For only $ 300 million, Square Enix sold the studios Eidos, Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix Montreal to the Embracer Group (source: Embracer). If the name does not tell you: Embracer Group is a Swedish group that has been buying game and entertainment companies for years. Among other things, you will find Gearbox Software (Half-Life), Aspyr (Knight of the Old Republic, Star Wars Jedi Knights), Warhorse Studios (Kingdom Come: Deliverance), Piranha Bytes (Elex, Ris, Gothic) and more studios under the patronage The Embracer Group.
And why did Square Enix pass these brands and studios so cheaply? As can be seen from a contract for the negotiations, Square Enix wants to invest the money in promising businesses such as blockchain, artificial intelligence and cloud .
What does it mean when Tomb Raider and Deus Ex change the owner?
But one thing is particularly interesting for players: The IPS Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and Legacy of Kain (and more) change the owner, which of course raises the question of their future. And as EMBRACER officially puts it, more money is to be put, especially in Tomb Raider and Deus Ex:
“For example, the two original IPS Tomb Raider and Deus Ex AAA games worth around $ 88 million and about $ 12 million sold. Embracer sees the possibility of investing in these brands , as well as in additional IPs such as Legacy of Kain, Thief and other original brands. ”(Source: Embracer)
In particular, Deus-Ex fans in particular can take notice here , although of course nothing has yet been confirmed. But what should an investment look like, if not like a new part to the iconic cyberpunk series? Or even a fresh remake?
Embracers have already shown that they want to get classics back. Shortly after the purchase of Aspyr 2021, the studio announced the remake of Knight of the Old Republic.
Can you look forward to new Tomb-Raider and Deus-Ex games soon? You should keep an eye on the brands, because Embracer will surely show what exactly they meant with the planned investments.
